Am Fuß des Vulkans / At the foot of the volcano

Vor fast 40 Jahren brach der Vulkan Eldfell auf der Insel Heimaey aus. Lava und Felsbrocken verschütteten den halben Ort. Der Strom aus flüssigem Stein floss nur wenige Meter vor Jóns Haus entlang, direkt auf der anderen Straßenseite. Im Wohnzimmer von Jón hängt ein Ölgemälde, es zeigt die Bucht von Heimaey, in der Ferne die Felsenküste, im Vordergrund Häuser mit roten Dächern. Das Bild hat Jón selbst gemalt, in Anlehnung an die Aussicht aus seinem Schlafzimmerfenster - vor dem Ausbruch. "Damals lag mein Haus mitten im Stadtkern", sagt er.

Wenn er heute aus dem Fenster im obersten Stockwerk schaut, sieht er nur grün bewachsene Hügel. Jón ist 87 Jahre alt, er ist Rechtsanwalt. Noch immer kommen Menschen in sein Büro im Erdgeschoss und fragen ihn um Rat. Aufgewachsen ist er auf einem Hof in Höfn, zusammen mit seinem Bruder Thorleifur. Später zog er auf die Insel. Nur wenige Wochen nach dem Vulkanausbruch kehrte er nach Heimaey zurück, schaufelte tonnenweise Vulkanasche aus der Ruine seines Hauses und baute es wieder auf. "In dem Moment sind die Vestmannaeyjar zu meinem Zuhause geworden", sagt er.

 Nearly forty years ago the volcano Eldfell erupted on the island Heimaey. Lava and boulder buried half the city. The stream of molten stone flew directly past Jons Haus, on the opposite side of the street. In Jons living room hangs an oil painting. It depicts the bay of Heimaey, the stone coast in the background. In the foreground, there are houses with red rooftops. Jon painted the picture himself, according to the view from his bedroom window before the eruption. "During that time, my house was in the middle of the city", he says.

Nowadays, when he looks out of the window in the top floor, he only sees green hills. Jón is 87 years old, he is a lawyer. People still come to his bureau in the basement to ask for advice. He grew up on a farm near Hofn, together with his brother Thorleifur, later he moved to the Westman Islands. Only a few weeks after the eruption of the volcano, he came back to the islands, shovelled tons of ash from the ruin of his house and rebuilt it. "In that moment, the Westman Islands became my home", he says.
